OK, so everyone knows life has an ugly side… but the point I’m trying to make is why does everyone think they’re worse off than the next person? It’s ridiculous! I despise the fact that so many people are so wrapped up in themselves that they have stopped even caring about other people full stop!
What is this nasty human condition? Is it good for our survival to care only for the self? The answer to that, in my opinion, is yes. Yes, back in the days when nearly all humans were fighting death at every turn from a big fat tiger or skin-melting disease, it was a good idea to need a fire within you to SURVIVE. Even now in a deadly situation that thought is needed. Mind you, it’s also important for our survival to try and rescue others. To save MORE human life.
However, the kind of selfishness described above is instinct. It is nature. The type of selfishness I’m condoning is from nurture, from society. It’s a way of thinking on a conscious level. The general thing I hate is when someone is sitting in conversation with other people and you can just see from their expression that they are thinking, “Oh my! That person next to me is waffling on and on about their divorce when I took a knife and scored red lines all over my thighs last night because I have no anti-depressants left!”, and yet at the same time the divorcee is thinking “Gosh, everyone shall be so interested in my terrible story, because it’s uniquely painful.” When what all us humans must keep in mind is that YES, it could be the worst thing that has ever happened to you, and the worst feelings you’ve ever experienced, but at the end of the day, SOMEONE HAS SUFFERED MORE.
I am not telling everyone to bottle up and let the nastiness fester, because that is extremely detrimental to a person’s psyche. All I’m saying is do vent bad feelings but be PREPARED TO LISTEN. So what if only their dog died and you just lost your Grandmother? If they feel as bad at the loss of the dog as you do for the loss of your Grandmother, then the pain, and the burden, is equal.
Unfortunately often people can make out to be more hurt than they actually are, for attention… But that’s a whole other kettle of fish.
